Mark Warren, A Retrospective

I am giving a talk at the 50th anniversary of the elementary school where I attended, and where my mother still teaches kindergarten. My mom has kept what appears to be every single drawing I have ever done in a box. No matter how strange or bizarre my obsessions were, she always encouraged me. I can only imagine what it would be like to hear a 5 year old ramble on and on about marsupials and dinosaurs.

I must have been a very odd kid. Thanks to Kelly Sherrod for taking these pictures!

My New Hero: Cyprien Côté

Radio used to pick up whale's songs from around the world, Chant de Baleines

"In 1968 Côté took a trip to Italy that would change his life forever. One morning he was outside exercising when a small earthquake took place. He noticed a beetle near his feet that left his den while the earthquake was progressing. Intrigued by this Côté took the beetle back to his lab. As it turns out, this insect- the LoDuca Beetle- can sense earth tremors and always comes out to the light when he senses anything. Côté immediately took over a thousand of the Beetles back to Quebec and designed his earthquake warning system, INSECTES TREMOLOITANTS. The device was simple- one dark room, one light room, one tunnel. If someone would ever see the beetle, they would know that an earthquake would be on the way. My Favorite Store in the Whole World

I have been feeling nostalgic for Mississippi recently, and I wanted to share these pictures of the best rummage store I have ever been to. It does not have a name, or prices on anything, and I am pretty sure it is made entirely out of tin. When it rains, you cannot hear anybody speak. That's how I bought a reel to reel for dirt cheap.

On the Lido

I have been slowly re-reading "Death in Venice" by Thomas Mann. I spent a period in Venice, Italy while an undergraduate. "Death in Venice" encapsulates perfectly the feeling of strange melancholy that exists in Venice. These pictures are from the Lido Beach area, an island near Venice where the protagonist in the story stays at a fancy hotel. While I was in Venice it was the winter and spring season, so the resorts had a peculiar, deserted feel, especially on cold and windy days.
