Mark Warren, A Retrospective

I am giving a talk at the 50th anniversary of the elementary school where I attended, and where my mother still teaches kindergarten. My mom has kept what appears to be every single drawing I have ever done in a box. No matter how strange or bizarre my obsessions were, she always encouraged me. I can only imagine what it would be like to hear a 5 year old ramble on and on about marsupials and dinosaurs.

This was a commission i made for my wee cousin Caroline. I anticipate her liking it, because lets be honest, who doesn't like hot air balloons, zeppelins, and dirigibles.

Moby Dick

I am in love with books- I have been ever since I read my first; "Ugg the Caveman". I can clearly remember finishing it on the way to the dentist when I was in first grade, and ever since I have never not been in the process of reading a book (or several at once). As a way to break through a slump/ transition last spring, I began to write chapters of "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville by hand. They are on pieces of paper cut into whale shapes, and are bound at the end of a harpoon (beautifully made by Mike Rossi).

I am not sure what these shapes are. Eggs, stones, topographical maps of hills, growth rings, thumbprints. Made from gesso (black and white) and blue opaque pigment markers.

A New Approach

Final Piece- Made using a two fan oscillation system with small anemograph(Little Brother), stencils, and paint. Started almost a year ago in Chapel Hill.
