Thanks to a hot tip from Tim Ayers, I found this car kiln near our place in Orange County. It took Chris and I about 3 days to dismantle and then put on pallets in one of our sheds. It will take a bit to pour a concrete pad and re-assemble, but I will try to keep updates on here.

New Years Day, Swimming with Manatees

Yes, this happened.

On Dec. 31st, Hannah, Nick, Matt and Sita went swimming with the manatee residents of 3 Sisters Springs in Crystal River, FL. We all piled into Matt's mini van, drove to Homosassa, slept in an RV park, woke up at 5am, put on wet suits, met the coolest captain ever (he looked EXACTLY like the Dude in Big Lebowski), and then swam with Florida's most benevolent megafauna, the manatee. Thank you to Captain Glenn (aka the Dude) for taking these amazing pictures!

New work!

Well... It's been a while since I have updated my blog, for which I am sorry. I have moved myself, my stuff, and my kilns from Penland, NC to Orange County NC (between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill). It has been an adventure, but I think things are finally coming together. I fired my first bisque/ cone 10 cycle in a new gas kiln with mixed results. The house is an old cabin which has been added on to over the years. The water comes out of a spring fed pond, and in addition to drying up all the time, it is totally unsuitable for using in glazes or clay body mixtures. I have been buying distilled water from the grocery store and we set up a rainwater catchment system. I have plans for making a still to get pure water, but there are only so many hours in the day... Any ways, I hope to update this more often and show some of the interesting problems and solutions that occur when trying to set up a production studio in this sort of environment. I love this faux marble trippy background.

In case you wondered, I use the following recipe for this translucent body:

Grolleg: 41%

G200 feldspar: 41%

SiO2 (200 mesh): 18%

and for a batch of 50 pounds, 75grams Sodium Silicate

Thats it, super easy and really pretty.

credit where credit is due- Tom Spleth came up with recipe, and I'm never kidding when I say that he has taught me everything I know about ceramics.

Also, check out eHow.com's article on identifying slip cast work, in which I am the "expert" consulted. Its good information, and I'm not (too) nitpicky, so I would say it is mostly correct. The author of the article was supercool, and it was really fun to get interviewed.

A web of sewer, pipe, and wire connects each house to the others.

In 206 a dog sleeps by the stove where a small gas leak causes him to have visions;

visions that are rooted in nothing but gas.

Next door, a man who has decided to buy a car part by part excitedly

unpacks a wheel and an ashtray.

He arranges them every which way. It’s really beginning to take shape.

Out the garage window he sees a group of ugly children enter the forest.

Their mouths look like coin slots.

A neighbor plays keyboards in a local cover band.

 Preparing for an engagement at the high school prom,

they pack their equipment in silence.

Last night they played the Police Academy Ball and all the officers slow-danced

 with target range silhouettes.

This year the theme for the prom is the Tetragrammaton.

A yellow Corsair sails through the disco parking lot and swaying palms presage the

 lot of young libertines.

Inside the car a young lady wears a

corsage of bullet-sized rodents.

Her date, the handsome cornerback, stretches his talons over the molded steering wheel.

They park and walk into the lush starlit gardens behind the disco just as the band is striking up.

Their keen eyes and ears twitch. The other couples look beautiful tonight. They stroll around

 listening to the brilliant conversation. The passionate speeches.

Clouds drift across the silverware. There is red larkspur, blue gum, and ivy. A boy kneels before his date.

And the moon, I forgot to mention the moon.

Model Citizens and Updates

I apologize for it being so long since updating last. It has been an exciting couple of weeks.

It all started inauspiciously, however, when I got waitlisted at NC State for the industrial design and outright denied for MIT's ACT program. Oh well.

So then I was in Florida and Mississippi for about two weeks visiting family and doing some work on the farm in Mississippi. While there, I got an unexpected e-mail inviting me to be a part of Model Citizens NYC's 2011 show for Design Week. It is going to be held in the Chelsea Art Museum from May 12th - 15th.

I am extremely excited to be a part of this show, please check out their website and see what Model Citizens is all about, it's a really awesome concept and the artists/designers/ craftspeople they select and support are super talented. I'm extremely flattered and excited to be a part of what they are doing. If you live in NYC, please please stop by and say hi. I will be showing my ceramic work and some drawings of cups.

In other news, if you live in Chapel Hill, please check out the new show at LIGHT going up on May 7th. I will have some drawings and new tableware. LIGHT is a fantastic gallery, and I am really happy to be showing work with artist's whose work I respect as much as Amy Tavern and Leigh Suggs. Cindy, who owns and curates the gallery has been extremely supportive of my work ever since we took Clarence Morgan's class and sat next to each other during the summer of 2010.

This is a picture of the ceiling in Mississippi. I took some photos there which I will post soon.

Mark Warren, A Retrospective

I am giving a talk at the 50th anniversary of the elementary school where I attended, and where my mother still teaches kindergarten. My mom has kept what appears to be every single drawing I have ever done in a box. No matter how strange or bizarre my obsessions were, she always encouraged me. I can only imagine what it would be like to hear a 5 year old ramble on and on about marsupials and dinosaurs.

I must have been a very odd kid. Thanks to Kelly Sherrod for taking these pictures!

One morning last spring I was struck by how purple the dirt outside my window was, so I ball milled it for 24 hours intending to use it as a terra sigilatta, but then I cast a cup in it. All of these images are materials/ casting body experiments done over the past year.

Stone Glaze Experiments

Tom has been grinding and shaping stones recently, and he offered me some of the very fine dust that comes off the rock during the polishing process. I glazed and lined a cup with it for the most recent reduction firing Ian and I did. These results were totally unexpected and really beautiful. I can't wait to play around with it some more in the next firings we plan on doing. Also, as an aside, the last thing I thought I would be doing two years ago would be to get excited about putting rock dust on clay objects. Oh well...

Tom Spleth and Casting Porcelain Boxes

Last Sunday, I went over to Tom Spleth's house to talk about a project he was working on and needed some help getting done. He had been prototyping porcelain boxes to put a series of prints of skulls into. We had a week to: construct a kiln, fire-proof a room, construct pouring jigs to help pour the 150 pound molds, cast the boxes in porcelain, fire the boxes, and polish the boxes. He needs 20 total, but by the 1st of February we needed 1 complete box.

We missed the bucket once, but luckily a lot of it fell on me as I tried to catch it.

We built the kiln up around the cast box lids and bottoms, leaving just a few inches around the pieces and kiln furniture, and then put the top on.

Tom fired it today and everything seems to be fine. I will post an image of the boxes when they are finished.

"In 1968 Côté took a trip to Italy that would change his life forever. One morning he was outside exercising when a small earthquake took place. He noticed a beetle near his feet that left his den while the earthquake was progressing. Intrigued by this Côté took the beetle back to his lab. As it turns out, this insect- the LoDuca Beetle- can sense earth tremors and always comes out to the light when he senses anything. Côté immediately took over a thousand of the Beetles back to Quebec and designed his earthquake warning system, INSECTES TREMOLOITANTS. I am currently in Charlottesville, Virginia. There is a bridge near the Art Department building where students paint murals advertising events (the "Beta" Bridge). This has been going on since at least the 60's, and over the years these millimeter thick layers of paint have added up to over an inch of paint over the whole bridge. I was curious what a cross section sample would reveal, and above are the results. Pretty amazing and beautiful. This is from a relatively thin section, but you can see the amazing variations created by years and years of information layering. I'm not sure what to do with these objects, but stay tuned.

And, speaking of information layers, the UVA Library system is an incredible resource.

I tried to create a vessel with the least amount of effort; using a chainsaw, I limited myself to 6 cuts, plus an indention on the top creating a cavity. It is cherry wood covered in a mixture of raw clay and milk paint, and gesso in the cavity.

Some new work I made this spring in Tom Spleth's class. These two are high fired porcelain, based off a strange plumbing fixture I found over the winter. They are intended to be cups for liquids, but would work well as pencil holders or soup bowls.
+Coming soon: white cups. (apparently taking pictures of white objects on a whitish background makes it hard to focus the camera.)

As a part of the Penland Core Program (if you are thinking of applying you should) we have the winters off, and the rest of the year is very much "on". We have just received our newest batch of hatchling eaglets ready to soar: Ian Henderson, Amanda Thatch, Rosina Saqib, Ele Annad, and Daniel Beck. They arrived last week in a snowstorm. Due to their hale, hearty natures, they all made it safe. Since then, we have been busy as a group settling in to our house, getting ready for the year, participating in team building exercises (trust falls, glider construction, name games, etc.)
So anyways, the winter time of introspection and tangential research at a leisurely pace is over. I hope to post some images of things I have made in those wintry months, but I will have to do some serious time management, never one of my strongest suits.

I just got back from Philadelphia where I got snowed in and Josh, Dave, and I made some strange electronic music.
Josh supplied the blanket splatter paint art, he refers to them as his trophies (like the kind you get when you go on safari). Weird dude. Great time.
I plan on posting music as we go through and separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff. Stay tuned. Keep watching the skies...
